Watch out space fiends, your reign of terror is over. Blasto has arrived. Okay that was a little campy but for Sony's newest super hero Blasto campy is a way of life. Blasto is an intergalactic super hero with an ego the size of Jupiter. He's kind of a cross between Flash Gordon and The Tick, with the game play style of Tomb Raider. Captain Blasto is called upon to stop an intergalactic empire of green dudes from taking over Uranus. Obviously this is the subject of most jokes made in Blasto. Blasto can be a slow game at times which is contrary to the Blasto ads you may have seen showing a fast paced shoot'em up with lots of wit. The action is slow and wit isn't funny. The graphics are cool. Campy style settings which revolve around you and give a feeling of 3D. Unfortunately Blasto suffers from too much pop-up to really make it an over achiever. The sound and music are weak at best. Blasto makes wise cracks during the game which are far and few between. The control is fine. It gives you everything you could possibly need while trying to save Uranus. Blasto is not the long awaited action game we've all been longing for, but its entertaining enough to take a look at, maybe a rental perhaps. Blasto is voiced by the late Phil Hartman of SNL and News Radio fame. This great talent was pretty much wasted in Blasto for he wasn't given enough to do. However Phil's voice does bring Blasto to life as did all of the characters voices he provided so well on the Simpsons. I think Sony should have taken a glance at Gex: Enter The Gecko also for Sony Playstation and coming soon for N64. A much better game in my book. Gex provides state of art 3D graphics, much better action, and consistently makes wisecracks that are actually amusing. Gex is voiced by Comedian Dana Gould now known for his role on the sitcom Working. I'm not saying that Dana Gould is more talented than Phil Hartman, its just that Dana was given a lot more to do with his character. My final thought on both of these games is this. Buy Gex, rent Blasto.
