FINAL FANTASY ANTHOLOGY

by Jay "THE FLEA" Wade

Now I've always been a RPG fan, I've played 8-bit games like Dragon Warrior series and Zelda to the 16-bit games like Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana. Now some how I missed playing any of the Final Fantasy games until part VII. For a while I was looking for a used copy of Final Fantasy 3 (US version), but the game was really hard to find. Then Square released Final Fantasy 5 and 6 together in one package.

Now for those who don't know the Final Fantasy history, Final Fantasy 6 is the same game as Final Fantasy 3 on the SNES. and Final Fantasy 5 was never released here in the States. I have seen the FF3 (US Version) and the only thing that's different on the PSX version is one; They added some Full Motion Video that plays here and there with the story. and two; loading time. This is not a good thing but you have to expect a little with a CD-Rom game. The loading time is not really bad, but it does slow the game down at times.

Some people clam that FF6 is the best of the series. well, Its a great game but I still think Chrono Trigger was the best 16-bit RPG. The story really pulls you in and you can really see how the Final Fantasy series evolved into what it is today. When you play FF5 it's all classic medieval magic fantasy then in FF6 you see they have crude technologies and machines and Magic is only a myth.

The graphics and sound have not been upgraded to a 32-bit game. It looks just like it did on the SNES so if your only into the eye candy of the more resent RPG's then you might not like FFA. If you never played FF5 or FF6 (3 in the US) and want to catch up on a classic then this game is a must have. If you Imported a copy of FF5 and played FF3 on the SNES then unless you a real Final Fantasy fan and must own every version, there's nothing really new to offer. Unless some FMV, a English translated FF5 and a cool sound track disc (which is included with the games) is really worth it to you buying the game again. Personally I hope Square and other companies remake more classics return to the PSX. Like Final Fantasy 1-4, Dragon Warrior series and Chrono Trigger.
