POWER RANGERS LIGHTSPEED RESCUE

by Wyatt "JOEDOG" Elliott

Remember when the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers were popular? True, it always sucked, but at least in the early nineties they were hip. Now Power Rangers has gone through so many changes, names, and young actors it's just pathetic. Yet, they just won't let it die. THQ has decided to make games based on Power Rangers' latest incarnation. First up, Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue for PlayStation and Nintendo 64.

The PlayStation edition is an old-fashioned beat em up. A Streets of Rage, Final Fight, and numerous Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game rip off.
Dull graphics, terrible control, and lame sound makes up this title. However, for the sake of argument. It is playable. When it comes right down to it, what else are you gonna do with a Power Rangers game? With the exceptions of a couple fighting games, a Pinball game, and a Kart Racer, this has been the common style for Power Rangers games.

I mention that the PlayStation Power Rangers' game is playable for a reason. The Nintendo 64 version is NOT.

First of all the N64 Power Rangers' Lightspeed Rescue game is nothing like its PSX counterpart. Instead of fighting various baddies on the streets of Angel Grove, you must clean up pollution in the city. To do so, you run around the city spraying the goo with your cleansing gun with an aerial view to play from.
Understandable the N64 has trouble handling FMV, but to tell this story they have resorted to lame pop up comic book style frames. This game is truly weak even for a Power Rangers game. This game had me laughing so hard at it. This game makes the N64 Superman look like game of the year!

The PlayStation Power Rangers at least had some effort behind it. This game looks like nobody gave a rats behind about it. They had a contract to fulfill and this was the result of a weekend's worth of work. THQ recently announced the next line up of Power Rangers games based on Fox Kids seventh incarnation of the "popular" kids show. A Nintendo 64 version was left out.
