THE SUFFERING

by Wyatt "JOEDOG" Elliott

I believe I have said it before, if not or if this is your first time reading one my reviews, I shall
say it again. Video games have become a horror fans #1 source for fulfillment. Hollywood
let us down, time and time again. First they don't produce enough horror films anymore, and
the one's the do are either crap or high quality crap. And even when they are good, they
wuss out on the gore. However video games it seems is getting gorier, edgier, and scarier
then anything that's come out of Hollywood in years. Maybethat's why Hollywood is looking
to video games for ideas. But then of course, they screw it up and a abomination like House
of the Dead is produced. (shudder)

But that's a whole other topic. Let's stick with the subject at hand. I'm talking about The
Suffering for Xbox. The latest game from Midway to out gore everyone else and scare us
twice as much in the process. If you like Action, horror, scares, and lots of gore. The
Suffering breaks all the rules and brings you the worst the human imagination can come up
with. The Suffering takes place in an old run down prison, where the worst of the worst are
sent to die. Our "hero" is sent here for killing his ex-wife and kids. On his first day in the
prison, it is attcked by what can only be described as demonic creatures that were too
gruesome for the latest Hellraiser flick. Almost everyone in the prison is brutally
slaughtered. It up to you, our "hero" to survive while trying to find a away out. This is where
the fun begins. The Suffering is more than just a Resident Evil or Silent Hill rip off. They take
it one step further. The Suffering has all the mystery and horror of those games, but speeds
it up and puts a more action spin on it. In fact, the bggest surprise of all, is theygive you the
option for first person perspective. It works really well in this mode. It gives you a completely
different fell to the game. It such a different experience, it almost makes it a new game.
Definitely worth checking out.

Graphically Midway has this coffin nailed. The game brings lighting effects to a whole new
low. I mean low levels of light that shine here. Turn off all the lights in your house and play
at night. You will spook yourself silly. Creepy sounds, creatures, and images flash before
your eyes. Blink and you may miss the scariest moment in the game. This game toys with
your mind. I kid you not. And found, this game has more cussing than a Tarrintino film. The
Suffering is not for kids. It earns every bit of its Mature rating and is proud of it.
This game may be called the Suffering, but you will not Suffer playing it.
